Amber trees have the power to symbolise, inspire and express our deepest feelings of love, gratitude, protection, and happiness.
— The Amber Tree
When walking along the shingle beaches between Felixstowe and Southwold, you may not have known that you were stepping on a valuable gift from the North Sea. This stretch of coastline is called the 'Amber Coast' and is a popular spot for finding fossilised resin.
This resin comes from ancient forests that existed where the Baltic Sea is today. At first glance, raw amber resembles a plain brownstone, but it transforms into a beautiful gem after being polished. Since the end of the last ice age, Britain has been receiving amber from the cold North Sea. This tree sap, which is forty million years old, sometimes even contains insects and other remnants of a long-lost world.
